Why Be a Mentor? Making a Difference in a Young Person’s Life

By Meghan Coops – Practicum Student with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley & Current Mentor

Stepping into the role of a mentor can be a deeply rewarding experience, offering you the opportunity to make a significant impact on a young person’s life. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley, this experience is not only rewarding on a personal level but also contributes to building a healthier and more vibrant community.

As a mentor, you play an important role in the life of your mentee. You offer support, guidance, and encouragement as they navigate through challenges and transitions. Your presence in their life can provide stability, a positive role model, and someone to turn to during difficult times. By being a consistent and caring presence, you can make a lasting difference in their life.

The Impact of Mentoring

  1. Mentoring Empowers

Mentoring is transformative. It empowers young adults by providing them with guidance and direction, often when they need it most. It’s an opportunity to share your life experiences and offer valuable advice that can have a lifelong effect.

  1. Skill Development for Mentors

Mentoring also offers the opportunity for personal growth and skill development. As a mentor, you are challenged to communicate effectively, lead by example, and be a positive influence in your mentee’s life. These skills can then be applied in all areas of your life.

  1. Community Engagement

One of the many beautiful aspects of becoming a mentor is the chance to contribute to your community actively. By stepping up to be a guiding figure, you’re making a tangible, measurable difference that ripples out to the broader fabric of society.

The Personal Connection of Mentoring

Becoming a mentor is a deeply personal experience. It’s about walking alongside a young person, connecting on a human level, and sharing life’s joys and struggles. The mentorship bond is one of the most valuable and rewarding relationships you can conceive, and its effects not only transform the mentee but also have a significant impact on the mentor.

My Journey as a Mentor

Working as a mentor for both Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley’s Go Girls and Explorations programs, I have first-hand seen the positive impact that mentoring has on mentees.

From supporting the making of new friendships and development of social skills through fun group activities to witnessing the blossoming of newfound confidence through empowering mentees within our programs, it is clear that mentoring catalyzes growth and a beacon of positive influence, illuminating a path toward brighter futures for the children/youth of Langley.

As a mentor, the journey of witnessing these transformations has not only been fulfilling but also incredibly rewarding. The joy that comes from knowing you’ve played a role in shaping a brighter future for these children is truly immeasurable.

Imagine the Long-Term Reward: The Satisfaction of Watching Your Mentee Thrive

Imagine looking back on your experience as a mentor and seeing the person you’ve helped shape. Watch your mentee walk the stage at their graduation, embrace a new job opportunity, or simply grow into a kind, thoughtful adult. The pride and satisfaction in witnessing their journey and knowing how far they have come is indescribable.

Mentoring a child has the potential to plant the seeds for their future success, happiness, and fulfillment. The investment of your time and energy is a valuable contribution that can have a ripple effect on your life and the community as a whole.

So, why be a mentor? Because you have the opportunity to make an incredible impact on someone’s life and be part of something bigger.
