A previous Big Sister submitted a story to our agency executive director about her Big Sister match:
“I just wanted to say that the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program is truly amazing! I was paired with a little girl…about five years ago. We participated in the program for two years or a little over that but unfortunately had to stop because after I got pregnant, I couldn’t maintain the program’s time commitments.
I would like to let you know that this program has changed my life and hers. We never stopped seeing each other (even though it’s not frequent, we communicated on Facebook and by text all the time).
For the first time ever, she invited me to watch her year-end dance performance. Although it was my second daughter’s 2nd birthday, I would not have missed that performance for the world! Camera in hand, I watched her dance and watched the other dancers dance to her choreography. I sat proud as a peacock. I love that girl so much and her solo dance was so beautiful I couldn’t even take proper pictures as I was trying to hold back tears. At the end they had an awards ceremony. I waited hoping she would win something and was almost disappointed, but they saved the best for last! She won the “biggest” award…Choreographer of the Year and Top Performer! I have never been so proud! I cried like a baby.
The long and short of this story is that I’m sure your job is not easy and neither that of the coordinators but you guys truly do make a difference in people’s lives and I would like to thank you all for bringing this wonderful child and her family (mother) into my life. It’s been so wonderful to watch her grow into such a wonderful young lady and know that if she had not been in this program, she may not have found the confidence to dance like she danced last night. She used to perform for gymnastics when she was younger but she was quite shy when we first met and her confidence and self-esteem weren’t as pronounced as they are now.”
