Agency Happenings

Pub Night Raises $2,200 For Our Mentoring Programs

We are so happy that over 80 people came out to have a great time and support our Pub Night fundraising event at Murrayville Town Pub on June 23rd! Attendees enjoyed a roast beef buffet dinner, chances to win some awesome door prizes, and take part in our pub-themed games. We'd like to thank the staff at Murrayville Town Pub for their excellent service and for hosting the event, the prize donors who made it possible for those at the event to win some awesome prizes, and all of the people who came out to support our agency while having a great time together!

Boston Pizza Funding Makes Explorations Possible

Thanks to the generosity of Boston Pizza's Future Prospects Foundation's $10,000 grant, our agency was able to start and grow our Explorations program, which has served over 40 youth at HD Stafford Middle School since its inception in Spring 2017. With the help of a grant from the Boston Pizza Foundation and the Rotary Club of Langley Central, we will be looking to expand the Explorations program into new schools throughout the 2018/19 school year.

Children who participate in Explorations choose from a list of several options, one activity that they would like to “explore”. Leaders with an interest in these fields from the Langley community teach children all about the topic they’ve selected through interactive learning and demonstrations.

The first forty-five minutes of each Exploration session is spent with all children in the program (regardless of the activity option they chose) having a snack, playing a game, getting exercise, and/or participating in a group discussion. For the last hour and 15 minutes, the children will all separate into their chosen activity with their leaders and have full access to the HDSMS's associated amenities.

If you would like to support this program by becoming an Explorations leader, contact us today!

Agency Baseball Game

The weather wasn't the best, but everyone who attended our annual Agency Baseball Game had a great time! Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun game on June 3rd at Condor Park.

In-School Mentoring Wraps Up Until September

With the end of another school year, we have concluded our In-School matches until the new school year. Many of this year's matches will reconvene in the new year, and we're looking forward to starting some new matches in September. Thank you to all of our volunteer mentors and school liaisons for making the ISM program possible, and to our funders of the 2017/2018 program:
AMES Family Foundation
Canada Post Community Foundation
City of Langley
Coast Capital Savings
Hamber Foundation
Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation
Rotary Club of Langley Central
Vancity Community Foundation

BBBS Canada Regionals

Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada holds a National Convention where staff from agencies across the nation are invited to network and build their skills in areas such as youth engagement in our communities, understanding what programs serve children best, and how to recruit more mentors. The Convention was split into Regionals this year, meaning four of our staff and one of our Board members could attend this important event set over two full days in Burnaby. We can't wait to use what we learned to make our agency an even more positive child serving presence in Langley.
Enterprise Holdings Grant Presented By Preston GM
Our agency received a $3,000 donation/grant from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. The cheque was presented by staff at Preston Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac in Langley.
BC Lions Tickets Donation
We were able to send one of our matches and a waitlist child and his parent to a BC Lions game, courtesy of a donation from the Langley Advance. We hope that the Lions' win against Montreal made the night even more memorable!
This Month's Donations
A number of organizations, both local and national, showed us their generosity by choosing to donate to our agency this past month!

Twenty Eight Towing - $200
LAMB Motoring Club - $1,024
Hamber Foundation - $1,000

We receive no direct government funding, so it's donations like these that make the existence of our agency and its mentoring programs exist. Thank you so much to all of our donors for making a difference in the lives of children in Langley.

They'll also be working on fundraising, event planning, and learning all about how we screen and train our volunteers. Welcome to the team!
